Salmon

Salmon is the group name for lots of fish in the family Salmonidae. Other fish in the same family include trout , char , grayling and white fish.

Some salmon display anadromous life strategies while others display freshwater resident life strategies. Salmon are native to the North Atlantic and Pacific Ocean.

Many species of salmon have been put into non-native environments such as the great lakes of North America and Patagonia in South America. They are farmed intensively in many parts of the world. Salmon are born in freshwater, they migrate to the ocean and then return to freshwater to breed. Salmon are said to return to the exact spot they were born in to breed. Marine research has shown this to be true this homing behaviour depends on olfactory memory.
