Lions

Lions are one of four big cats in genus panthera and members of the Felidae family. Some male lions can weigh over 250 kg and they are the second largest big cat after tigers. Wild lions live in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. Endangered ones live in Gir Forest National Park in India having disappeared from North Africa in ancient times. Until 10,000 years ago lions were the most wide spread land mammals. They live for 10-14 years in he wild but can live past 20 if in captivity. In the wild males will hardly ever live longer than ten years because of fighting injuries caused by other males. Compared to other cats lions are very sociable. Each pride will contain about 2 males and a number of females as well as their offspring. Females hunt in groups preying mainly on large animals.
